- Wall/End Panels – Corian advices against sticking wall/end panels to the worktop, this is because for every metre of Corian there must be a +/- ½ mm per metre tolerance for movement. Corian must be allowed to breath – it will naturally expand and detract throughout its’ lifecycle. Therefore if you were to stick a panel to the end, there is a possibility that the joint will crack. Should a customer insist that an end/wall panel be stuck to their worktop – we cannot guarantee the joint and they will have to sign a disclaimer!
- Certain colours are not advised to be used in a kitchen – this is because they have higher levels of natural pigments and may require more maintenance. Should a customer choose to have one of these colours they will have to sign a disclaimer.
Worktop Installation
Installation must be undertaken by a specialist team, who are experienced and competent.
Fitting solid surface worktops without the correct installation team can result the manufacturers warranty being declared void.
Guidelines for Good Use
- Always use panstands and trivets to protect the timber from rough, hot, wet and dirty pots and pans. Direct contact from iron, steel or copper vessels can also stain the timber surfaces.
- Always use cutting boards to chop and slice food upon. Do not cut directly onto the surfaces.
- Strong acids, such as those found in drain cleaners should be wiped away at once. Prolonged exposure to strong acids can cause whitening which can be very difficult to remove.
Customer After-Care Program
The following guidelines have been provided to make you feel more relaxed with maintaining your new solid surface worktop.
How to clean your Solid Surface worktop
Solid surface is not self cleaning – but you will see over time that the upkeep of your new solid surface worktop is simple!
For everyday cleaning it is advised that all spills should be wiped as they occur, using a damp cloth and a common household degreaser (e.g. Sif, Bar Keepers Friend) or a mild cream abrasive cleanser.
Once or twice a week it is a good idea to give your sink a good clean, this is to remove all the fat and oil that can accumulate in the sink.
Use a spray with ¾ of liquid household bleach and ¼ water to spray on the sink then leave it overnight, or for a few hours. The exposure time should not exceed 16hours. The next morning – rinse/clean the sprayed areas with a damp cloth – the sink should be completely clean.
When dealing with resistant stains such as vinegar, coffee, tea, lemon juice, dyes, ketchup, red wine or vegetables spills; you should first try the guidelines previously outlined. If you are still left with a stubborn stain or light scratch a last resort would be to use an abrasive plastic scouring pad and rub over the stain with some bleach, then with warm water rinse several times – and lastly dry with a soft cloth. After you have done this to restore the lustre – use a damp cloth and blend some mild abrasive cream cleaner into the scrubbed area so it matches the entire surface – do this by rubbing in a circular motion.
Important issues to be aware of
Chemical Spills
Accidental spills of strong chemicals (for examples of these please see below) should immediately be washed with soapy water to avoid damage to worktops.
Paint Stripper
Brush Cleaners
Metal Cleaners
Oven Cleaners
Acid Drain Cleaners
Cleaners containing Methylene Chloride
Nail Varnish Removers (Acetone based)
Heat
Avoid pouring boiling liquids straight into sinks without turning the cold tap on.
Never put hot pans (especially cast iron pans) directly onto your solid surface worktop. This kind of exposure to heat can damage any worktop!!! To avoid this always use a heat protection pad or a trivet with rubber feet, alternatively leave the cookware to cool on the hob first.
Scratches
Never cut or chop on you worksurfaces – it can score and mark, use a chopping board instead.
Dark, heavily pigmented colours will show dust, scratches and ordinary wear and tear more readily than lighter, textured colours. (For a list of colours that come into this category – call KCM Tops Ltd)
Your Solid Surface worktops will develop slight abrasion marks through normal daily use.
